Account manager ratio
Account manager ratio is the number of client accounts one account manager carries at the same time. Derive it from hours rather than from headcount: available hours at a 50% to 60% utilization target, divided by the hours one account consumes each month, including the internal prep behind every client call.
The ratio most agencies quote is whatever their current team happens to carry, which measures tolerance for overload rather than capacity. A manager on twelve accounts who answers email at eleven at night is a ratio of twelve with the overtime hidden.
The number moves with service type, fee size and how much the account manager also delivers. One agency can run eight accounts per manager at standard while another stalls at four, and both can be right.
